The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the world’s second largest intergovernmental organization next to the United Nations. It has a membership of 57 states across four continents. The Organization aims to protect and safeguard the interest of the Muslim world by promoting global peace and harmony. The body serves as the collective voice of the Muslim Ummah and has galvanized and supported causes of interest to the Muslim world.
The Organization was established on the 25th of September 1969 in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco. The decision follows a historic Summit addressing the criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem. The OIC’s three main bodies are: the Islamic Summit, the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), and the General Secretariat. The guiding vision of the Organization is outlined in a 10-year Action Plan (2016-2025). The OIC-2025 programme is anchored on 18 priority areas, these include: peace and security, Palestine and Al-Quds, poverty alleviation, counter-terrorism, investment and finance, food security, science and technology, climate change and sustainability, moderation, culture and interfaith harmony, women empowerment, Joint Islamic Humanitarian Action, human rights, and good governance, among a host of others.
